Archiving the present

Archiving the present is the idea of capturing our relationships, interactions, and experiences with our immediate community, surroundings, and social contexts in the most authentic form. Its narratives are not based on interpretations but real, impactful stories of now. Why wait for the future to archive the present when we can start today?

This unique approach could redefine our understanding of archives and their role in shaping our future. Nepal Architecture Archive is currently working on the concept of Archiving the Present to develop projects and ideas. Please stay tuned for the updates.

We also run exhibitions, programs, and courses to understand the archives, their scope, and the process. Visit our Exhibition and Programs page to see what’s on.

To understand archives, one must understand its process.

Let’s create an unpacking list!

The unpacking list is a basic inventory created after receiving any gift or acquisition and is the first step in archiving information. The process involves extracting the basic details of the boxes, folders, or materials received and creating a general list. It is an elementary but crucial document that provides us with general information like the date of acquisition, name of the donor, number of materials, types, sizes of materials, dates of creation, and title of the materials, along with the names of the makers/producers. All this information may not be readily available; thus, we only capture the details that are included with the materials.

Given the importance of this step in archiving, we have designed a guided unpacking session to help you understand the process of creating an unpacking list. It will walk you through the steps and provide a template to ensure you accurately capture all the necessary details.
