For the past seven decades, many heritage documentation and conservation projects in Nepal have involved international grants and expertise. The individual stories, experiences, and memories of the country’s expatriate community have become an integral part of our recent history, playing a significant role in shaping contemporary Nepalese society. These scholars belong to one of the last generations to witness Nepal’s drastic transformation in the face of globalization. As part of this change, they share their observations with us, offering a unique story.
Using oral sources to understand the past has been a widespread practice worldwide for generations. Recognizing the profound impact of these projects on individuals and communities is essential, as they foster a shared human experience. While our collection preserves the history and details of our built and cultural heritage, the oral history project documents scholars’ firsthand experiences with our heritage, culture, and community, enriching our understanding of our collective past.
